Creamy Honey Mustard Chicken Ingredients
Chicken breast, pounded to be the same thickness this ensures even cooking
Chicken seasoning, 1 batch
Flour, 1 cup
Olive oil, 1 tablespoon
Butter, 3 tablespoons
Chicken broth ⅓ cup
Whole grain mustard, 2 tablespoons
Honey, 1 tablespoon
Heavy cream, 1 cup
Creamy Honey Mustard Chicken Directions
Start with the chicken. It is really important that the chicken be the same size, to ensure an even cooking. You can cut them in half lengthwise, or using a meat mallet pound them out to be the same size. Whichever method you prefer is just fine. You can also substitute chicken tenders for a crowd or if you need more pieces.
Mix the flour and chicken seasoning together. Seasoning the flour to dredge the chicken in is also really important, otherwise the chicken will not have any flavor, and that is just boring. You want tasty chicken. Using a fork, mix the flour and seasoning well.
Heat the oil and one tablespoon of butter in a pan over medium high heat.
Once the pan is hot, add in the chicken and cook for about five minutes per side. They should be a nice golden brown color when you flip them over. Remove the chicken and set it aside for now to rest.
Remove the pan from the heat and add in the rest of the butter, followed by the chicken broth, mustard, and honey.
Reduce the heat on the stove to medium and return the pan to the stove. Stir the sauce until the mustard has dissolved and the chicken broth has started to reduce. Make sure it doesn’t reduce too much though. I didn’t time this out, but you’ll see the sauce start to thicken up, and that’s what you want.
Once the sauce has reduced a little bit, it is time to add in the heavy cream. Let that start bubbling and add the chicken back in. Now let the chicken finish cooking in the sauce until it reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees and the sauce has reduced to your liking. I like mine to be about the same thickness as pasta sauce. Use your own judgment on how much you want the sauce reduced.
Garnish with some fresh parsley and serve!
Creamy Honey Mustard Chicken Notes
If you don’t have whole grain mustard, you can easily substitute dijon. Whole grain is simply my preference, but you can use whatever mustard you like.
I made this for my husband and me, so I only needed two chicken breasts. If you are making it for a larger group, follow the directions above. Once the sauce is done, put the chicken in a baking dish, pour the sauce over the chicken and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through.
For an added layer of flavor, add in some fresh thyme with the sauce. This adds an amazing pop of freshness into the dish that I love.
You can also add mushrooms in. Saute them between removing the chicken from the pan and making the sauce.
Why I Love This Recipe
This recipe is so easy to make! There is something comforting about creamy sauces, and this one certainly hits that spot. The chicken comes out so tender and delicious.
I am a big fan of from-scratch recipes that don’t break the bank and are simple to make on a busy night.
I served this with mashed potatoes and oven roasted carrots. You could easily serve this with pasta or rice as well.
