Homemade Italian Seasoning Mix Directions

Measure out all of the spices in a mixing bowl and stir well.

Using a food processor or a spice grinder, blend the spices until they are a fine powder, which will make incorporating them into foods much easier and tastier. You can store it as-is until you’re ready to use and then grind it into a powder, just be sure to give the mix a good shake before measuring any of it out, as some of the heavier and bigger spices like rosemary will have settled at the bottom of the jar.

Grinding the spices to a powder form is a very important step because each spice has a unique size and texture, and they simply will not mix into your food properly without being ground up.

Store in an airtight container, in a cool dark place. I love mason jars for this purpose.

Note that if you are giving this amazing spice mix as a gift during the holidays, I do recommend not grinding it up. Let the recipient of this gift do that themselves. Aesthetically, I like the look of the seasoning mix before it is ground, because you can clearly see what is what. For gift giving purposes, that makes for a much prettier presentation. But if you’re using it at home, you can pre-grind, or wait until you’re ready to use it.

Recipe Notes

The red pepper flakes are totally optional in this, but I like them. They don’t add any real spice, because of the amount. Just an added depth of flavor. You can certainly experiment with it though and find out if you like them or not, or use less, depending on taste.

Why I Love This Recipe

Making spice blends at home is so simple to do, and better for you for a variety of reasons.

There are no additives when you make a seasoning mix at home. Many commercially made spice mixes contain additives, yet are very vague when it comes to the ingredient list, so it is hard to determine exactly what you are consuming. This is a real problem if you have any kind of specific dietary restrictions or needs. This recipe is vegan, and I love knowing that because I made it, it is completely safe for a vegan friend of ours to consume when he comes over for dinner.

Making my own spice mixes at home is far more affordable. Everything I’ve linked to above is exactly what I buy. I love buying bulk spices because I don’t have to do it often, and it keeps my pantry organized. Since I already have all of the ingredients, there is no need to buy an extra blend of the things I already have. That is such a waste of money, in my opinion.

Homemade spice blends can be made in bulk for later use very easily. Just double or triple the recipe. Homemade mixes can also be a great holiday gift for someone who loves to cook or the person who is difficult to buy for.

It is also a lot easier to cater to taste and dietary needs when you control what is going into a seasoning mix. Little tweaks like more or less salt, more or less spice to cater to individual needs makes it perfect to fit into your home and life.

The prepper in me also loves making my own spice blends because it means I never run out of it mid-recipe. One of my biggest pet peeves is running out of something in the middle of a cooking or baking project and having to stop to make an emergency run to the store to replace it because I didn’t notice we were almost out.

Being able to make my own spice blends is also a huge confidence booster because it is knowledge and knowledge is power, especially when there are supply shortages or simply because I ran out mid-recipe.

Homemade Italian Seasoning Mix Uses

I love to mix this seasoning mix with some olive oil and coat chicken in it before grilling. It is a perfect addition to homemade garlic bread!

Mix this seasoning with a little olive oil, vinegar, and garlic for a quick, tasty, and healthy salad dressing.

You could use this instead of parsley for a garnish on meats and side dishes for an extra little pop of flavor that is unexpected.

This recipe is so simple to make, and there are so many ways to use it in meals. You literally can’t go wrong with making this yourself and enjoying it!
